Millsap student chosen as Byrd Scholar

MILLSAP – Tabbitha Hicks, a 2008 graduate of Millsap High School, has been chosen as a recipient of the prestigious Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship.

The Byrd Scholarship Program is a highly competitive program. It was created by the United States Congress for the purpose of promoting student excellence and achievement and to recognize exceptionally able students who show promise of continued excellence. It is a federally funded, state-administered program. The U.S. Department of Education awards funds to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, which administers the selection of candidates and the distribution of scholarship monies.

To be nominated for the selection process, a student must compare well with his or her peers. Most Byrd Scholars have a grade point average of 3.80 or above, and score more than 1250 on the SAT.

Recipients may use their award of $1,500 per year at any degree-granting college or university within the United States. The awards are renewable for up to four years of undergraduate studies.

Tabbitha is the daughter of Jim and Connis Hicks. She was valedictorian of the Millsap High School class of 2008, and plans to major in education at Tarleton State University.
