A special kind of fashion show

Millsap students produce fashion show using some special models

By BRIAN SMITH

MILLSAP — High school students have been known to let their minds rest in the summer. It was last summer when Katelyn Booth had an idea on how to make life a little better for some.

The Millsap High School senior, a member of the MHS Family Careers Community Leaders Association group, had the idea of developing a fashion show, which the school had never done.

What made her idea extra special was wanting to include special needs students as the models.

She talked the idea over with her friend, Jessica Walker, and the seed for what was Friday’s Millsap’s FCCLA Fashion Show was born. The pair had wanted to hold the show earlier in the year. When the pair – who also worked on organizing homecoming week, “Every 15 Minutes” and a craft show this year – saw the work that would be involved, they decided to delay their venture.

“This is something we have both put our hearts in all year long,” Booth said.

Both girls were busy but focused in the final moments before the show, making sure everything was ready to go. The show involved 24 students from Brock, Garner and Millsap.

With the help of fellow FCCLA members and staff advisor Ashley Pike, the show went off flawlessly. The stage was decorated with 8-foot tall trees, designed by the MHS floral design class. Members of Brock’s fashion design group and Weatherford High School’s cosmetology class helped with makeup, hair and getting the models, ranging 5-19 years in age, ready to go.

Several businesses, including David’s Western Wear, Kohl’s, Belk, Rue 21, Raspberry Lane, Cowbabe’s and Fancy That, provided the outfits for the models. Many of the models seemed to enjoy getting onstage and showing the outfits, one young man flexing his muscles and nodding his head like he knew he was “all that.”
