Mineral Wells ISD sent three Destination ImagiNation teams to state competition in Katy, Texas, over the weekend and brought back some awards and a berth, once again, to global competition.

The Mineral Wells High School Challenge A structure team, called "Watch Out For That Teeeam!" (said like in the “George of the Jungle” saying), took second place and will advance to globals, which take place May 22-25 in Knoxville, Tenn.

The high school team – comprised of sophomores Hannah Gilbreath and Emanuel Garcia, junior Danner Eudy and seniors Kelly Cunningham, Miriam Garcia and Caleb Bandy – brought home the DaVinci trophy for “outstanding creativity” in their challenge, according to team sponsor/manager Jacki Bandy.

In addition, senior Caleb Bandy received the state tournament's Juliet and Dave Thomas Scholarship.

Half of the high school structure team members are veterans. Last Year Bandy, Gilbreath and Emanuel Garcia took the trip to Tennessee.

"The level of competition improves every year,” Garcia said of the state meet. “This year it was incredible, and we are very pleased we received the DaVinci for creativity.”

Much of this challenge lies, literally, on the back of a small, lightweight structure – designed to DI specifications – that typically holds hundreds of pounds of weight before it breaks. A structure that sustains proportionately more weight scores higher. Another part of the challenge is a student-written and costumed skit, which is timed to end when the structure breaks under its weight.

“We are anxious to improve our ratio and add to our presentation and props for global competition." noted Gilbreath

"We are currently working to improve our structure ratio for globals,” said Bandy. “We think the ratio needed to win at Globals is obtainable, with some work, and we are used to that.”

Placing seventh at the state DI meet was the high school Challenge A technical team "No More JACK." The team consists of sophomores Noheley Garcia and James Mitchell, juniors Mirella Castor-Frutos and Ashton Kinkead and seniors Marshall Crabtree and Dylan Pruitt.

“I am once again very proud of all my teams for competing at such a high level and representing Mineral Wells so well,” said Jacki Bandy. “The challenges and the competitors get more fierce every year and it is such a thrill when other managers and officials tell me how wonderful our teams are and want to learn more about our program.”

Bandy asks the public to mark down the following fundraisers on their calendars and to please attend:

• May 11, 7 a.m.-4 p.m., they will have a garage sale.

• Thursday, May 16, is the DI auction and

supper.
