Rams singers Gabby Kindle and Thomas Pophin qualified for and participated in the Texas Music Educators Association Region 2 Pre-Area Choir Auditions and both finished in the top 10 in their sections.
After the second round Pophin moved from 16th chair to 10th chair; however, he will not advance to area. Kindle finished in sixth chair to become listed as the first alternate to area auditions.
Part of the weekend-long event was the all-region choir clinic and concert. Mineral Wells Choir Director Mac Chestnut said that Kindle auditioned for the solo for Saturday night’s concert and was selected at the mid-November competition and clinic.
“She sang the opening and closing solo of ‘You are the Music,’ by Dan Fields, to a packed house at [Texas Women’s University’s] Margo Jones Hall,” he said. “Conductor Dr. James Franklin, head of Choral Studies at Sam Houston State University, conducted the All-Region Choir and congratulated Gabby on an a beautiful performance.”
Kindle will attend the area competition in Abilene on Jan. 12, but Chestnut said she will only audition if one of the top five is ill or loses eligibility.
