MWHS One-Act Play wins district again, advances to area competition

Mineral Wells High School has captured the One Act Play district championship for the fourth consecutive year and advanced to the next round of competition.

Out of the five schools that performed at the UIL One-Act Play District Competition on March 27, MWHS’s performance of “Digging out the Boys” landed them one of two spots in the area competition.

In addition to winning the district championship, Mineral Wells students racked up several awards for the evening. Lacy Barnes received “Outstanding Crew Member.” Jessica Whaley, Lacy Barnes, Tambrey Davis and Dylan Hearn received “Best Overall Crew.” Cody Rollins, Jacob Brown and Preston Hoskins received “All-Star Cast,” Annie Barnes received “Best Actress” and JD Choate received “Best Actor.”

The writer, Laura Lundgren Smith, made a surprise guest appearance to the contest. The students were eager to speak with her and collect her thoughts on their presentation. She was amazed after viewing the performance of our students.

She shared with them that the cast did a remarkable job of telling her story about the lives of the three trapped coal miners and how this tragedy changed the lives of a mining community. Their interpretation “brought tears to her eyes.”

The UIL One-Act Play Area Competition will take place April 12 at Keller High School.
