Three eighth-grade students attending Millsap ISD recently took the initiative to coordinate and host a dance at the school to raise money for its special needs class.

"The three young ladies approached me in April sometime," said principal Jeff Clark. "They came up with a proposal, how they would organize this, how they would get chaperones, how they would raise money."

He said Taylor Thompson, Kirsten St. Cin and Rileigh Miller were already passionate about the special needs classroom.

"They, on their own, will go into the classroom ... and help the teacher with these students," he said.

Though each of the students played a role in planning the fundraiser, Clark said Thompson took the helm as a leader.

"She would check in every Friday to give me updates about where they were in the process," he said.

Ultimately, Clark said the students hosted the event earlier this month and raised about $400.

"They held the dance and it was successful," he said, noting all proceeds will help ensure "the teacher could provide extra resources."

In addition to the dedication of Thompson, St. Cin and Miller, Clark said many Millsap students responded to the unique call for assistance.

"The student body were eligible to come and pay a little bit of money for an entry fee," he said.

The dance was held at the Millsap school cafeteria.
