Four physical education classes at Travis Elementary recently participated in a bicycle safety class sponsored by BikeTexas.
The event Monday was a continuation of the state bicyclist advocacy group’s work at the school, following the distribution of safety lights and materials to students earlier this year.
Local bicycle enthusiast Neil Reddick participated in both BikeTexas events at Travis and explained the recent safety class covered a variety of topics.
Students were exposed to basic traffic laws, he said, and learned bikes must obey those same regulations.
In addition to learning from the presentation, students were also given supplemental information to take home and study with their guardians.
Brenda Chuleewah of BikeTexas was the instructor, teaching about 200 fourth- and sixth-graders how to safely navigate roads as a bicyclist and the importance of helmets, lights, and functioning equipment.
Though Monday’s instruction was limited to four classes, teacher Arenda Crawford said the safety classes will continue to reach all students as they take physical education. She said the information will ultimately reach all of Travis’ 752 students.
