District 11’s Texas Retired Teacher’s Association honored local centenarian DeLois Duncan with an award for her service to teaching and the association at their district meeting May 8 in Granbury.
Duncan turned 100 years young on March 18. She served as the local TRTA chapter’s president for four years.
She accepted her first teaching job in the early 1930s at Vineyard in Jack County near Wizard Wells. She taught first, second and third grades all in the same room, “about 12 students in all,” she said.
While teaching there, she met the rural postman from Wizard Wells, Ira Duncan, who carried the mail to Vineyard. With the Great Depression just beginning, she said he was attractive not only because he had a job, but because “he had a car – a new V8 Ford with a rumble seat.”
