The Gordon Community Library is having an Appreciation Tea 2-4 p.m. this Saturday at the library.
This was chosen as a time of Thanksgiving – and that is what it is all about! There are so many people who have made our small library such a huge success.
We have been given furniture, shelving of all kinds, books and books and books. We started our book collection by driving to St. Jo, Texas, which started a library several years ago, and were told they had extra books. They generously gave us their duplicates in the two trips that we made.
We then received books from the Springtown Library, Weatherford Library and Dublin Library. Individuals have given us boxes of books, sacks of books and individual books. We soon ran out of space and our museum is being moved to the Development Corp. building. We will soon have a Welcome Center/Museum in that building, which is located north of the post office.
We have given three trailer loads of books to the Shriners, which collects books for the Texas Scottish Rites Children's Hospital Summer Book Sale. This past summer they made over $5,000 on book sales and this money goes toward scholarships. So, many of you had a part in that accomplishment. At the present, we have had to weed our books down to only one copy (either a hard back or paperback).
We received a grant of $5,000, from the Tocker Foundation to purchase new books. Many new children's and young adult books have recently been purchased, as well as adult bestsellers.
We could never have done this without a lot of help. We have a dedicated group of volunteers. Tavia Tiblets and Jerry Simien have headed our group of volunteers. Other faithfuls are Bettie Watson, Charlotte Balding, Linda Clark, Pam Fambro, Waynell Brammer, Holly Goetz, Dick and Marge Sharp, Bruce Rogers, Victoria Low and Betty Allison.
The library board has "steered" us as we are learning the ropes of managing a public library. It is made up of President Lillie Petty, Vice President Betty Allison, Secretary Victoria Low, Treasurer Bill Hopkins and members Shaye Trigg, Tavia Tiblets, Joel Taylor, Max Wheeler and Bruce Rogers.
We are placing gold stars on our back wall with individual names of those who have been our most generous donors. We have so many to thank, we are afraid that we will have overlooked some, but be assured that all who contributed in any way are most appreciated!
Please join us Saturday for this celebration.
