GORDON — What an exciting year it’s promising to be! Enrollment is up, 221 at last count, and spirits are high!

Some exciting changes are taking place for GISD this year …

In the cafeteria: Fresh ideas and fresher foods! New equipment in the cafeteria will enable the staff to cook tastier and more nutritional food. Steam ovens have been installed, so that fresh/frozen vegetables may be used in place of canned ones. They are also adding entrée choices for third-12th grades, a first for us. Many homemade breads and dessert items are also showing up on the menu. Thanks goes to Morgan Clark, the new cafeteria manager, and the kitchen staff for all their hard work and innovative thinking!

The cafeteria itself looks different this year, too. New paint, in school colors, has brightened the atmosphere. Wall decals are on order, and will be installed soon.

On the football field: The Longhorns are looking great this year, beginning the season 2-0 depending on Friday night’s result. The cheerleaders and drill team, under the direction of new sponsor Sarah Lively, are showing their spirit with new dances, routines and cheers. Pep rallies have really come alive this year. Come on out and join us for some Longhorn spirit and pride!

In the classrooms: Some new personnel and new goals this school year will ensure that the school’s high standard of education are met. With the addition of the Student Advisor’s position, held by longtime employee Richard Holder, we anticipate more scholarship opportunities and career training for high school students.

What’s happening: The Gordon PTF (Parents, Teachers & Friends) will sponsor a Homecoming Dance on Friday, Sept. 17. Live music will be provided by the Calvin Milburn Band. Check them out at calvinmilburnband.com. Great Texas country music, they were the featured artist for August 2010 on texasreddirtmusic.com.

The dance will be in the old gym immediately following the game, until midnight. Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for students and children 4 and under are free.

The Gordon PTF will also host the Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., located in front of GISD and the old gym. Outside vendors will be charged a $25 set up fee, If interested, send an e-mail to shayebrett@aol.com.

Everyone is welcome at these events! Come on out and show your support for Gordon ISD, the Longhorns and the community and have plenty of fun while you’re at it!
