On Saturday, April 20, at the State Convention for Porcelain Painters, held in San Antonio at the Hilton San Antonio Hill Country Hotel & Spa, our very own local artist, Allene Coupland, was presented with a plaque as an Honored Member of the Texas Federation.
Each year a member of the State Federation of Porcelain Art Clubs of Texas is chosen by the Hall of Honor committee to represent the state as an Honored Member. The recipient has to meet the following criteria. That person must have held office, been committee chairperson, or served on a committee for the SFPAC of Texas, actively participates in club activities and assists members on a regular basis, contributes to making the annual convention a successful event for all members, has done any or all of the above in some capacity for at least 10 years. This category is open for nomination from individual members or clubs, of which there are presently 47 clubs and 770 members. Only one person is chosen each year for this honor.
So it came as no surprise to those of us who have had Allene as a teacher and mentor that she was chosen. She personifies all the qualities of an Honor Member. She has been painting for the past 28 years, applying and teaching techniques in all areas of porcelain art. She has had many students throughout the years and is always willing to take on a new one.
She has been a faithful volunteer for committees involved in the planning and executing of the annual SFPAC convention for many years. Allene has contributed her art and her time to make the convention auction a successful event. She has held demonstration classes at the convention and has always had a following of new students and even teachers who want to learn from her.
Allene is a founding member of the Palo Pinto Porcelain Art Club, and she is the reason that this local club stays active, constantly bringing in new members, as demonstrated this year by the club winning the award for recruiting the most new members of all the 47 clubs attending. Allene is truly an asset, not only to the art of porcelain painting, but to the community of Lone Camp where she resides with her husband, Bob Coupland, and has three of her four children as neighbors.
The Palo Pinto Art Club is very proud of our teacher and friend who has taught us not only the art of china painting, but the art of being the best you can be to your family and to your community.
