Local hoopsters honored for skills

The programs put together by the Mineral Wells Parks and Recreation Department offer more than an outlet for energetic youth; it’s a chance to be recognized as two local residents were honored recently for their basketball skills during last year’s season.

Parks and Recreation Superintendent Donnie Hoover told the department’s advisory board they had two individuals who excelled last year and received recognition from the Junior National Basketball Association and Junior Women’s National Basketball Association.

Seventh-grader Aaron Doyle “started in our league when he was 8,” said Hoover. He noted that Aaron averaged 11 points per game, 10 rebounds per game and five assists per game.

Hoover also recognized Cora Jenkins, a sixth grader, who began playing in the basketball league when she was 6 years old. He said Cora averaged 26 points per game, 10 rebound and five assists per game.

“These two athletes carried the teams they were on a lot,” he told the board.

Both Cora and Aaron received certificates from the Jr.NBA/Jr.WNBA that honored them as 2007 All-League Players.

Cora was also recognized as an all-region player for the 2006-07 season, representing the Dallas Mavericks team region, stated Senior Director Nadine Glinski in a letter. Though Cora didn’t advance to the national finalist stage, Glinski wrote, “her accomplishment is exceptional as she is among the 155 All-Region recipients.”

“I appreciate these young people and their parents,” Hoover remarked.

Hoover also discussed the department’s upcoming programs such as adult softball, swim team registration and adult basketball, among other things.

The steering committee for the recreation center is scheduled to meet March 22 at 5:30 p.m., the board determined.
