Former center cook passes away

March 27, 2008 09:19 am

Good friend and long-time cook at the Senior Center, Myrl Hefner, passed away on Easter Sunday. He was buried on Tuesday morning of this week. Myrl retired last fall after nearly 15 years as the chief cook for the center. His death came after a period of hospitalization and hospice. He will be remembered and missed.
There is a little more information regarding the reconvening of the Texas Neighborhood Council assistance, for seniors and disabled citizens, for the payment of monthly utilities. They will be at the center on each first and third Tuesday of the months to follow, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
There are certain documents they will need in order to be of service. Some are obvious, some may not be, so it would be best to contact the local TNC before their next visit, so that you may have the proper documentation in hand when you are interviewed. Their next visit is April 3.
On that same day, Daryl and Teresa Tarmasso will also be on hand, but in the morning at 11 a.m., with their program on introductory genealogical research. Their morning research is followed in the afternoon, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., with a continuing, deeper, research.
While their assistance to center participants costs nothing, the instructions are priceless for those who wish to dig more deeply into their family history, to leave for those who come after. Everyone should know and have respect for their roots.
This Friday, March 29, features the monthly birthday party (with cake and ice cream), which begins at 10 a.m. with The Band playing our favorite music, and continuing through lunch, which is sponsored, each month, by Healthline home health. Just to hear The Band is worth the trip, but add the party, flowers and meal to all that, topped by the birthday festivities, makes it a great day. Especially if it is your birthday month!
Be reminded that there are only two more dates for the AARP tax help. Wednesday, the 2nd and the 9th of April, are the days. The times are from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the afternoon. Time extension has been made to accommodate the larger number of retirees, some of whom no longer file annual returns, to apply for the “stimulus” payment recently proclaimed by the government. AARP sponsors this service and Wanda Styles and her “crew” do this work for us. Don’t forget to say thanks to these great ladies. They have provided this service for us for several years, and we owe them.
Quilters can get a special treatment thrown in while they are waiting for the tax return line to thin out. The Willing Workers Quilters meet regularly on Wednesday from 9 a.m. till noon, then begin again at 1 p.m. and stay busy until 3 o’clock, so if you aren’t a regular quilter person, but you would like to work on it occasionally, bring your needle and thimble and have a seat. It will be fun, make the time pass faster, and you might hear some community news that you haven’t heard before. Bring a friend if you aren’t getting your tax return done.
One more treat is on the way for Wednesday morning when the Hinkle Family makes an appearance at the Senior Center. This is a highly anticipated bunch of singers and the center is happy to announce their upcoming visit. We also invite the entire community to be on hand for the April 2nd performance by this fine group. It will be a busy day, but an exciting one.
