Auto claims clinics hit town

By Lacie Morrison

Several insurance agencies are hosting car clinics to process the thousands of claims that they've received since Thursday's hail storm.

“They were calling within five minutes of the hail hitting,” said Phil Luker, of State Farm Insurance.

When asked how Thursday's storm compared to previous incidents, the 18-year insurance veteran said, “It was one of the worst hail storms I've seen - the size of the hail and how long it fell. When it's [the hail] usually this big, it's not this widespread.”

He said they were receiving claims from all areas of Mineral Wells. Luker estimated his office has turned in between 1,200 and 1,300 claims for automobiles and homes.

State Farm Insurance agent April Martin calculated they've received almost 1,300 claims as of Tuesday afternoon.

With a car clinic set up to process claims, Martin said they are calling people to set up appointments. “We've been working seven days a week.”

In her 19 years in the insurance business, Martin recalled the last major storm was in 1999, “but the damage, the hail was much larger this time.”

Farm Bureau Insurance's Pat Bazzell said they are calling and scheduling their participants for a clinic beginning today.

“Cars need to be clean,” she advised, as it helps to show the damages. She said they've had more than 1,000 claims at their office.

District Manager of Diamond-Triumph Glass, Ed Bustillos from San Antonio, Texas, works on a car windshield. He said the Pennsylvania-based auto glass company has six crewmembers working locally, hailing from branches in Texas and Oklahoma. The glass supply is coming through their Irving, Texas, branch. Bustillos estimates they have worked on 65-80 cars per day. He said that there are considerations beyond visibility with today’s car windshields that makes it important to get broken windshields fixed. Windshields now are important to the structure of a car, he said, especially in a rollover wreck. He added that airbags are designed to deploy off windshields, too, and will not operate properly if the window is broken. Francisco Villarreal looks over his 2007 Ford Fusion on Tuesday at the State Farm Auto Claims Clinic on U.S. Highway 180 East. Tuesday was the clinic’s first day. The Mineral Wells ISD crossing guard’s car was blasted with hail last Thursday while parked outside his home in the 2300 block of NE 2nd Street. State Farm representative Tim Wentzel called the car the worst they had seen all day and said it should not have been driven in. It’s windshield was caved in and glass covered the dash and fabric. He pointed to the work gloves Villarreal used to drive the car in. State Farm Catastrophe Team Manager Nancy Higbie said the auto team has been busy since a February hailstorm in Tyler. ‘Hail season is quite early this year,’ she said.
