Senior Center News
Mid-summer is here, no matter that the calendar says that it is only a little bit over a week old.
Of course, the Center will be closed tomorrow, Friday, for the celebration of the first day of our national independence. What a marvelous event, the commemoration of that happy day in 1776, when men's drive, effectively laying aside the chains of the monarchy of Great Britain, like “younguns” step out on their own, creating their own democratic, representative government from scratch. They learned as they proceeded that the fighting war might be over, but the legislative battle was just beginning.
They created the great United States Constitution, a gift toward democratizing the civilized world! What a document. Sometime, just get a copy and sit and read it. See what forethought was written into the body of it, and then a process initiated within its structure to allow for changing times, peoples and economies. If there were ever a “Bible” written specifically for governing a nation of such varied origins as ours, then it would have to be the U. S. Constitution. I believe that the men who wrote it were under the hand of God. I pray that our nation will continue to be a strong influence on the rest of the world, as long as it stands. Go light a firecracker, roman candle or any other fireworks, unless our drought conditions prohibit it, and thank God you are a citizen of this great nation!
The Monday morning “Summer Sing Along” continues each week, from 10:30 to 11:30, filling in for the Silver Notes' rehearsal time while they are on hiatus for the summer. All singers, good or bad (cut that, there are no bad singers when the heart is right and the spirit is active) singers are encouraged to start the week off right by raising voices, either in praise, gladness or any other emotion you may have on a Monday morning. Don't let this opportunity pass without you!
Tuesday marks the July Health Check Day, sponsored by the Mineral Wells Medical Supply and Palo Pinto Home Health. Both sponsors provide for testing of blood pressures, weights and blood sugar readings. This is a cost-free service and can serve as a “go-between” for you and your physician, providing his/her office with important information regarding impending or on-going conditions. Be at the Center between 9:30 and 11 a.m. There is no appointment necessary, just check in and sit down and visit as you await your turn. Read the paper, drink a cup of coffee, if you like, and soon they will call your name.
On Wednesday morning, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, the Happy Feet folks will be here, courtesy of Integra Care. They will tickle your tootsies and make you happy all over, not just your feet. They can't call it Happy All Over, because that title wouldn't fit on the Senior Center calendar, but that is what you get – happy all over! You must call for a reservation, however. Without it, so many bring their feet for the happiness that the foot person runs out of time and leaves many unhappy feet in the process. Call the Center at 325-6470. Pat will make the appointment for you.
Just because the Center will be closed on the 4th of July doesn't mean that there wasn't a blast to celebrate it! The famous cook, Frances the Great, provided a holiday “picnic in the Center” with hot dogs, chili, onions, you name it, lunch. After eating all that, the “blast” came later, after everyone got home, thank goodness!
Enjoy the holiday by being careful and being nice to your company.
