'Hounds still in the race

The Strawn Greyhounds stayed alive in the Texas high school six-man football playoffs Saturday night by beating neighboring district rival the Gordon Longhorns, 89-58, before an estimated 5,500 people at Ram Stadium.

The Greyhounds celebrated their state quarterfinals victory, avenging their only loss of the season, 60-30, in Gordon on Oct. 31.

The heartbroken Longhorns, which won the district title by virtue of their regular season win over Strawn, ended their season with an 11-2 mark.

Strawn will face a familiar foe – Abbott – the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last year in the state semifinals. The game will kick off at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Glen Rose. The winner of that game will play for the state six-man title.

Abbott on Friday upset top-ranked Calvert, 38-28. Strawn won the state championship in 2003.
