The Mineral Wells Fire Department will take to the streets Friday and Saturday for their annual Fill the Boot campaign supporting the Muscular Distrophy Association.
Volunteers will be posted near Bank of America, on S.E. 1st Street and East Hubbard, from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Motorists will have an opportunity to drop donations into the firefighter’s boots to raise money for research into the neuromuscular disease.
The local fundraiser is part of a nationwide push by fire crews to help combat the deadly disease. Much of the progress researchers have made in battling the disorder came from MDA funding and all of the money raised this weekend will support that mission.
Local donations have traditionally been high as citizens donate varying sums to support those with the disease. Most individuals diagnosed with MD will die before reaching the age of 16.
