Burn ban motion fails in commissioners court

A motion by Palo Pinto County Commissioners to reinstate the burn ban failed in a special session held Friday morning at the county courthouse.

The ban had been lifted at the last regular commissioner's meeting on Monday, March 23, because Palo Pinto County was low on the Texas A&M Drought Index and grasses were becoming green and less dry.

After some consideration of water levels and weather conditions, the vote on the motion was tied, which resulted in the measure failing.

Palo Pinto County Fire Marshal Buddy Harwell said the ban will probably be reinstated at the next commissioner's meeting on April 14, unless current weather conditions change, because current water levels are falling.

According to Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and Harwell, some things to remember include:

• No burning on days when wind is more than 23 miles per hour.

• No burning on days when gusts are up to 20 miles per hour or more.

• Contact Palo Pinto County Sheriff’s dispatch when burning with information regarding when and where burning will take place.

In other business commissioners unanimously approved:

• A contract with Ritchie Brothers of Fort Worth and Precinct 3 to sell equipment at auction.

• A petition to close a platted portion of block 18 of South Front Street in the township of Santo, Precinct 4.

• Reimbursement of money to the buyer of a 1968 Massey Ferguson tractor sold at auction by Precinct 1.

• An amended contract for Internet services.

• Renewed PRI contract with CenturyLink.

• Voiding a contract for caliche with Mac Shafer and Precinct 3.

• Accounts payable.
