Pet adoption center continues to help adopt out shelter animals

Walden’s celebrates with ribbon cutting at 10 a.m. Saturday

By LIBBY CLUETT

The Palo Pinto County Humane Society and Walden Farm and Ranch Supply in Mineral Wells will officially celebrate the store’s adoption center with a ribbon cutting at 10 a.m. Saturday and pet adoption, beginning at 9 a.m., and the store hopes citizens will join in to support potential pets.

The large adoption center, which enable the store to house adoptable cats from the Mineral Wells Animal Shelter, was given to the PPCHS by Petsense when the pet store closed in May. Petsense and store manager Karon Corner had hosted pet adoptions since opening in the fall of 2007. The Petsense adoptions resulted in finding homes for over 1,600 local animals.

When the PPCHS searched for a new venue for animal adoptions and began to price cat display cages,  two things fell into place. Waldens agreed to house the cats and some small dogs, similar to Petsense, and Petsense President Bob Angstead offered to donate the large cat-adoption center, consisting of stainless steel cages and a framed structure surrounding the cages, valued at $6,000.

Since setting up the adoption center about seven weeks ago, Waldens has already adopted out animals from the Mineral Wells Animal Shelter. Earlier in the week, the local store had adopted out 26 cats and dogs.

“It’s a good opportunity to give back to the community and help out,” said Mineral Wells Walden’s Manager Rusty Holbrook of the adoption center. “We enjoy it and it’s a positive thing all around.”

He added that the cats and kittens keep things interesting and he noted, “We have a good turnover rate [with] one adoption every two to three days.”

Additionally, Waldens has hosted some large-scale weekend pet adoptions, including one last week and a Pet Extravaganza in June.

On Saturday the store will host another, featuring dogs from the Mineral Wells Animal Shelter that are looking for their forever homes. The adoption begins at 9 a.m. and will end at 2 p.m. or possibly sooner, if the day gets too hot.

According to Holbrook, the Mineral Wells Walden’s store will have one-day-only, in-store specials on pet-related products for customers.

Walden Farm and Ranch Supply is located south of McDonald’s, at 196 Garrett Morris Parkway.
