Summer feeding program

By TYLER MASK

For Mineral Wells parents in need of help with feeding their children this summer, Mineral Wells ISD has the solution in their Summer Feeding Program.

Beginning June 9 until July 31, MWISD is hosting a food program where children ages 0-18 will have free breakfast and lunch provided. Adults can also eat for $2.50 per meal.

“I have been in food services for years; it has always been there,” MWISD Food Service Director Carrie Martin said regarding state feeding programs. “This program is now mandatory for at least one month during the summer if you have at least 50 percent free and reduced meals in the school district. I know that [Mineral Wells ISD] serves from 400 to 600 kids a day for two months.”

The two locations serving food this summer are Lamar Elementary, June 9-June 26, and Mineral Wells High School, June 9-July 31. Breakfast will be served 7:30 a.m.-8:30 a.m. and lunch will be served 11:30 a.m.-12:30 a.m.

Extending the program’s reach, sack lunches will also be delivered 11 a.m.-noon to the following locations:

• Mineral Wells City pool.

• Cedar View Apartments.

• Pioneer Crossing Apartments.

• Mineral Wells Housing.

• Southridge Apartments.

“I think it is going to give parents peace of mind this summer,” Martin said. “We don’t just expect parents to come to us, we come to the kids. I believe it has a big impact because it shows that MWISD cares about the students. We communicate with the community to find out where the kids are so we can ensure that everyone that wants it is fed.”

For more information, contact Martin at 940-327-5133.
