Humane Society officials seize 35 animals from Garner-area ‘puppy mill’

By JUDY SHERIDAN | Lone Star News Group

GARNER — Thirty-five animals — most of them reportedly old and infirm — were removed from a Garner address by the Humane Society of North Texas Tuesday after the organization responded to an alert from Parker County animal control officers.

The animal control officers discovered about 150 animals in the 500 block of Hyde Away Lane on Monday, while following up on a call from a concerned citizen, Parker County Sheriff’s office Spokeswoman Danie Huffman said.

But when the Humane Society arrived to seize the animals a day later — with an assist from the PCSO — most of them were gone.

“They had given away over 100 animals,” Huffman said, referring to the property owners, a couple with the last name of of Williams. “(The Humane Society) seized 28 dogs, two cats, two rabbits and three rats.”
Peggy Brown, a spokeswoman for the Humane Society, described the Garner operation as a “puppy mill” for purebred dogs.

Several Great Danes were seized, she said.
“The animals we ended up with are in bad shape,” she said, “They’re no longer able to breed, not able to be profitable.”

“They’re seniors with cataracts, tumors, ear infections, skin conditions.

“Some of them look thin, but it’s hard to tell if they’re malnourished or if they have a health condition.”

Brown said the Humane Society will be evaluating the animals to see if any are adoptable and has already received calls from rescue organizations who have volunteered to take those that are not.

“They won’t be going anywhere until this is settled in the courts,” she said.

Huffman said a property hearing is scheduled in Judge Kelly Green’s office Tuesday.

An appeal could follow.
She said the sheriff’s office has no report on the incident.

“If the Humane Society is involved, it’s going to be their case,” she said.
