Local Bed and Breakfast featured on Tour of Homes

In anticipation of the Mineral Wells Zonta Club’s 28th annual Christmas Tour of Homes, the Index is featuring each of the six properties that will be on display during this year’s tour on Dec 8, from 2 to 5 p.m.

Joining the newly renovated Crazy Water Crazy Bath House, highlighted in Wednesday’s Index, is the Silk Stocking Row Bed and Breakfast on NW 4th Street.

According to information provided by Rebecca Patterson of the tour committee, the three-story Victorian home was built by a local doctor in 1904 as a boarding house so that his wife would have something to occupy her time. Since then, the house has seen many owners and hosted a multitude of guests, including Boyce Ditto – the namesake for the local library.

The home was remodeled in 1996 and opened as a bed and breakfast the following year by Bob Tyson and Kenn Saxton.

The current owners, Chuck and Wilene Manis, bought the home in December of 2002 and continue to operate it as a bed and breakfast with Victorian era decor and many various themed rooms. The couple ]are both Mineral Wells natives, with Wilene having been born and raised here and Chuck moving here at eight-years-old when his father was hired as a helicopter instructor for Southern Airways.

After marrying in 1970, the Manis family moved to the Metroplex, only to feel and answer the call to return home 11 years ago.

Since the Manis’ purchased the Silk Stocking, it has been featured in many publications and on television. It was on NBC’s Nate Berkus show in 2011, when Berkus remodeled the home’s “Safari room” with the help of Genevieve Gorder.

To see the Silk Stocking and other great Mineral Wells properties done up in their Christmas best, purchase tickets at the Mineral Wells Chamber of Commerce or any Zonta Club member location for $20 in advance or $25 the day of the tour.

The tour will also feature snacks and refreshments at Community National Bank at all times.

Proceeds from the tour will help support the Zonta Club’s many endeavors and service projects including Meals on Wheels, Koats for Kids, Z Club, scholarships, Girl’s State, Look Good Feel Better and Woman’s Club.
