A Mineral Wells Police Department investigation Friday, April 11, of an unauthorized use of a motor vehicle report led to the arrest of two men on theft and drug charges.

Arrested were David W. Slimp on charges of theft of property between $500 and $1,500 and Timothy N. Smartt on charges of possession of a controlled substance under 1 gram and theft of property between $500 and $1,500.

A man reported to police that his 2014 white Chevrolet pickup was stolen sometime early Friday morning from another man's residence, whom he loaned the vehicle to, in the 1300 block of Jacob Street, a police spokesman said.

Later in the day, around 1:50 p.m., the officer investigating the report spotted a pickup matching the description of the stolen vehicle parked in the 100 block of Garrett Morris Parkway, a police narrative reads.

The officer approached the vehicle to find Smartt in the driver's seat and Slimp in the passenger side back seat, the narrative reads. Smartt claimed he borrowed the vehicle from another man.

As the officer spoke with the two men about the stolen vehicle, more officers arrived on the scene.

These officers reported that two men meeting the suspects' descriptions had just bought almost $800 worth of merchandise from a farm supply store using a check from a metal contractor, the narrative reads. A clerk from the farm supply arrived on the scene with a copy of the check and a copy of the receipt.

Police discovered that the two men had all items on the receipt in their possession, the report said. The investigating officer then arrested Smartt, who said he also was in possession of narcotics. The officer then took off Smartt's boot and an orange medication bottle containing three yellow pills, one white pill, several blue pills and a clear sealable bag with a white crystal substance inside.

The officer also arrested Slimp on charges of theft by check, the narrative said.

According to the report the vehicle was returned to its owner.
