Abandoned house destroyed by fire

By CHRIS AGEE

Local firefighters responded multiple times to a structure fire in the 2600 block of N.E. 2nd Street.

According to Mineral Wells Fire Marshal Joel Thompson, the blaze was first reported about 8 p.m. Monday.

“It was an abandoned house,” he said, “unoccupied, obviously.”

The fire was reportedly intense upon the arrival of first responders.

“It already had fire through the roof,” Thompson said.

While firefighters initially worked to fight the blaze, he said their ultimate course of action was to monitor the fire until it burned out.

“We did attempt to go inside for a short time but conditions got too deteriorated,” he explained.

Reports indicated a flare up necessitated the response of a fire crew again just before 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Thompson said police told him two juveniles were reportedly seen exiting the home just before the fire was noticed.

A police spokesperson was unavailable for comment as of the Index’s deadline Wednesday.
