Deputy shoots, kills Graford man

POSSUM KINGDOM LAKE – A 26-year-old Graford man is dead after he was shot three times Sunday by a Palo Pinto County sheriff’s deputy outside the department’s substation at Possum Kingdom Lake.

Jacob Wade King died after he was shot once in the leg and then twice in the body after he allegedly charged a deputy wielding a broken knife, according to Sheriff Ira Mercer.

Mercer told the Mineral Wells Index that King was known to local law enforcement as having a criminal history.

The deputy was placed on administrative leave with pay until he believes he is able to return to his duties, Mercer said. “He’s pretty tore up,” the sheriff stated, requesting not to make public the deputy’s name at this time. “It’s not easy having to take someone else’s life.”

The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting, Mercer said, and the case will eventually be filed with the Palo Pinto County District Attorney’s Office for presentation to a grand jury. Mercer said the Texas Rangers, Texas Department of Public Safety and the district attorney were at the scene Sunday evening.

Mercer said in his opinion the shooting appears justified.

“Of course it’s a tragedy for everybody, including the officers involved,” Mercer said. “I’ve done everything I can to get the true story out. But I think it was a clean shooting.”

It is the first officer-involved shooting death in Palo Pinto County since April 2003 and the first involving a Palo Pinto County law enforcement official since July 2002.

The incident took place around 5:30 p.m. at the PPCSO’s substation on Park Road 36. The shooting was witnessed by five other law enforcement officials – four members of the sheriff’s department including the chief deputy and a captain as well as the chief lake ranger for the Brazos River Authority – who were at the substation when King reportedly slammed a red Chevrolet vehicle into a parked and unmanned sheriff’s department vehicle, knocking it into and damaging the substation.
