Kelley Family’s home a stop on Tour

By CLINT FOSTER

As part of a continuing series, the Index is highlighting each property on Zonta’s 28th annual Christmas Tour of Homes, Dec. 8. Next up is the Kelley Family’s home on NE 7th Street.

The Kelley house will join the Mahan Family’s home, the Silk Stocking Bed and Breakfast and Crazy Water’s brand new Crazy Bath House on this year’s Christmas tour.

Originally built in 1902, the Kelley family inherited the home from their son-in-law – who had already begun remodeling the house – in 2010. Although the house was in bad shape at the time, the Kelleys said, husband, Jim could see its potential.

According to the Kelley family, when it was first built the house was located in a “very elite” part of town, as it sits right behind the famous Baker Hotel.

Based on what they have learned from longtime Mineral Wells residents, the family said the neighborhood once held donkey rides through the streets.

Neighborhood residents  still refer to the road that leads into downtown Mineral Wells as “the Donkey Trail.”

The Kelley family employed local interior designer Amy Hopkins to design and decorate. When the Kelleys moved in from Lubbock, during December of 2011, Hopkins had the entire house decorated for Christmas and all the family had to do was move in their personal belongings.

The Kelleys added an outside kitchen, dining area and garage to “complete” the home in October of this year. They described the home as being a blessing in their lives.

Purchase tickets for Zonta’s 28th annual Christmas Tour of Homes at the Mineral Wells Chamber of Commerce or any Zonta Club member location for $20 in advance or $25 the day of the tour.

The tour will last from 2 to 5 p.m., Dec. 8, with refreshments served all afternoon at Community National Bank.

Proceeds from the tour will help support the Zonta Club’s many endeavors and service projects including Meals on Wheels, Koats for Kids, Z Club, scholarships, Girl’s State, Look Good Feel Better and Woman’s Club.
