The driver of a vehicle that crashed into a home on Old Millsap Highway last Friday remained in critical condition at John Peter Smith Hospital as of Wednesday afternoon, a hospital source confirmed.

According to Department of Public Safety Trooper Gary Rozzell, Diedra Stephens, 47, of Mineral Wells, was driving southbound in the 1600 block of the highway when she lost control of the vehicle.

He said the road was slick from recent rainfall and Stephens’ 2001 Mitsubishi Montero went off the road to the east and was airborne after running through a bar ditch. The vehicle then struck the side of a home.

According to reports, the engine compartment of the vehicle was partially burned; but the fire did not spread to the home. Stephens was trapped inside the vehicle for a short time prior to the arrival of fire crews who were able to extract her, Rozzell added. She was airlifted from the scene and taken to Fort Worth’s JPS Hospital for treatment of her injuries, he said.

Though no one inside the home was injured, homeowner Cathy Glover said she and other family members were shaken up after the incident.

She described the crash as “devastating,” noting she heard “a big boom and then the trailer started moving and everything started falling off the walls.”

Glover said she and her grandchildren have been displaced by the crash and have been living in a family member’s camper.
