MWPD arrests two for alcohol-related offenses

By CLINT FOSTER

The Mineral Wells Police Department made two arrests last weekon individuals who allegedly committed alcohol-related offenses.

The first stemmed from a disturbance call at a pub in the 2200 block of East Hubbard Street around midnight, Feb. 11. Mineral Wells Police Chief Dean Sullivan said officers rolled on the establishment after receiving a report that subjects were attempting to fight.

Upon arrival, Sullivan said an officer observed a Chevrolet Silverado pickup pull out of the pub's parking lot and head west without their headlights on. The officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the truck's driver cut through the Taco Casa parking lot on Hubbard and headed north, up NE 21st Avenue, before turning east on NE 2nd Street.

Sullivan said the officer had to turn on his siren to get the driver's attention before she pulled over in the 2200 block of NE 2nd Street.

Police said the 26-year-old driver – who had three passengers in the truck – had a pungent smell of alcohol and was confrontational. Police arrested her for suspicion of driving while intoxicated and evading arrest with a vehicle. Whether or not she was formally charged is unknown at this time.

The second incident was a warrant arrest at Walmart on Farm-to-Market Road 1821, around 3:30 p.m. on Valentine's Day. Sullivan said the super store's loss-prevention officers detained Michael B. Schmidt, 37, of Tampa, Fla., for suspected shoplifting.

When Mineral Wells police arrived and ran Schmidt's name through dispatch, they discovered he was carrying two felony Leon County warrants for intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle. Police arrested Schmidt and temporarily booked him into the M
