Health Fair set for Jan. 24

By TYLER MASK

It’s not often that people get free stuff, especially regarding healthcare.

But this month, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2399 is hosting their third annual North Texas Health Fair, and there’s going to be plenty of free stuff.

The event, which is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., is come and go.

The entire public is welcome to partake in the festivities and benefit from the free health services. Booths will be set up in the VFW Bingo Hall.

Health services offered will include pulse ox checks, blood pressure checks, blood sugar checks and more.

There will also be door prizes, among other things.

Service Officer for Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2399, Lee B. Downs has high hopes for this event as there are over 24 healthcare exhibitors coming.

Doctors, nurses, nursing homes, CareFlite and even a Veterans Affairs counselor from Dallas comprise just a few of the healthcare professionals who will be in attendance.

Downs’ ultimate goal for this event is to inform veterans of some of the benefits they can receive for having served their country.

“Some are not aware of the fact that some (healthcare professionals) honor veterans and give them discounts,” Downs said. “A lot of the merchants around here give discounts to veterans (as well).

“So, there’s a lot of different things that these veterans don’t know. So, we are bringing the information to them.”

Veterans are also encouraged to bring their DD214 for VA help with their benefits.

Beyond just healthcare professionals and fun, Adopt a Pet will also make an appearance at the fair.

“(There is) a theory that seniors and disabled veterans love to have a (pet) for companionship,” Downs said. “I had one veteran in here this morning that is a (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Veteran) who said ‘Oh, I’m looking to adopt a dog.’ So he is going to be there.”

Whether you are a veteran or just a citizen of Mineral Wells looking for something to do next Friday, stop in to the North Texas Health Fair and get some freebies.

For more information, stop by the VFW Post located at 1400 SE Veterans of Foreign Wars St., Mineral Wells, TX 76067, or contact Lee B. Downs at leebdowns@aol.com.
