Law enforcement officers responding to a shots fired call Tuesday afternoon in the 1300 block of S.W. 12th Street found a dog shot and killed by a county resident who said the canine and another were chasing and attacking his goats.

According to Pct. 5 Constable Gary Morris, the shooter’s property is located west of S.W. 13th Avenue on county property, just outside city limits, and therefore will not be charged with discharging a firearm.

Nearby resident Haley Stephenson said she found a Siberian husky and a German shepherd roaming the streets earlier Tuesday. She said her family was holding the animals in an attempt to find their owners.

“We were going to give it a few more days before taking them to the pound,” she said.

Both dogs managed to escape a perimeter fence, Stephenson said, and a short time later she heard “a shot and a yelp” and realized one of the animals was probably injured or killed.

She found the German shepherd in a neighbor’s yard but the Husky was already dead, she explained.

The man who shot the dog told the Index he arrived home and quickly realized something was wrong with his goat herd. He investigated and said he saw the dogs chasing and attacking his goats. He fired once at the Husky, killing it. The German shepherd was captured and taken to the Mineral Wells Animal Shelter.

The man said he regretted killing the animal but said he had to protect his goats, at least one of which was seriously injured. He said he has recently lost several goats to coyotes or large stray dogs.
