Until now, platelet donors in Palo Pinto County had to drive to Carter Blood Care in Fort Worth. On Feb. 3, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., CBC’s Platelets Bus will be at Palo Pinto General Hospital’s parking lot, bringing a mobile platelets clinic straight to local donors.

Palo Pinto General Hospital Auxiliary’s Blood Drive Chairman Pat Talkington said there are three components to blood, plasma, platelets and red blood cells. Platelets are the components that cause your blood to clot.

According to Talkington, the trick with platelets is that they are only good for five days after they are drawn. Day one and two are spent on testing, then the platelets can be used for the remaining three days. However, donors can give platelets every two weeks.

Talkington said there are some people who are very faithful to giving platelets, but there is always room for more donors.

“One of the reasons we are having the Platelets Bus come is to encourage more people to become platelet donors and [to] try to make it convenient for people so they don’t have to drive to Fort Worth,” Talkington said.

But the giving doesn’t end on Feb. 3, because the Platelets Bus will make a stop at PPGH every other month for the foreseeable future.

So far, three people have signed up for Feb. 3. The maximum CBC can take is 12, so there is still time to sign up and donate. Reservations are required.

“The best sleep that you get will be the night that you gave blood during the day,” Talkington said. To donate allow 1 3/4 hours and eat a good meal prior to your arrival. To make a reservation, call 940-682-6784. If you have questions regarding donations or medication you take, call Carter Blood Care at l-800-donate4 and ask for the doctor’s office.
