Top opera talent to perform in Garner

GARNER – Lauded bass/baritone opera singer Cole Grissom will make a visit to Garner today for a special performance at Bethesda United Methodist Church, beginning at  7 p.m. The church is located at 6657 North Farm-to-Market Road 113.

Grissom, a grandson of the late Margie (Coalson) and Charles Grissom, got the singing/acting bug in high school when he played Jean Valjean in “Les Miserables,” according to his great aunt Alleen Coalson Stringer.

She said he pursued this path and received a master’s degree at the San Francisco Conservatory and now lives in New York.

According to Grissom’s website, colegrissom.com, tonight’s program will include the following songs:

•Dutchman’s Monologue from Der Fliegende Holländer – Wagner

•I’m a lonely man Susannah from Susannah – Floyd

•Hear me oh Lord from Susannah – Floyd

Grissom is a graduate of Southlake Carroll High School and an alum of the New England and San Francisco Conservatories of Music.

Spanning the continent, he has sung such roles as Scarpia in Tosca, Michele in Il Tabarro, Olin Blitch in Susannah, Nick Shadow in The Rake’s Progress, Méphistophélès in Faust, Athanaël in Thaïs, Marcello and Schaunard in La Boheme, and the title roles in Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Tartuffe.

Tonight’s public performance is free.
