Old Jail focusing on ‘Your Freedom & Your Right’ for 4th

By BARBARA MANSON | Special to the Index

The Palo Pinto County Historical Association will have “Your Freedom and Your Right” on display beginning July 3, 2013, when the Palo Pinto County Old Jail Museum will present “The Bill of Rights,” an exhibition produced by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council and organized by Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

As citizens of the United States we have unalienable rights originally declared under the Declaration of Independence July 4, 1776.  Those rights that protect us from an oppressive government authority are enumerated in the first 10 amendments to the United States Constitution –  The Bill of Rights.

Adopted on Dec. 15, 1791, the Bill of Rights is the very basis of American ideals, guaranteeing the rights and privileges of all citizens.

To this day, the Bill of Rights has maintained its importance in courts of law at every level of government. “We are what we are,” said the late Supreme Court Justice William Brennan, “because we have those guarantees…faithfully enforced.”

In our day-to-day busy lives it is very easy to forget the importance of these rights, what they are and how thousands have died protecting those rights. Today our lives move at a rapid pace with cell phones, computers, the Internet and the proliferation of data about our private lives in hundreds of data bases in the cloud. Our governments grow larger and more intrusive every day.  Along with the freedom and rights given every citizen come the responsibility to understand and protect those rights.

Visit this exhibit during the celebration of the founding of our nation and recharge your faith in the fact that we all live in the greatest nation on earth. “The Bill of Rights” surveys the famous document itself and other important amendments to the Constitution that changed the course of American history. This exhibition is compiled of 12 photomontage posters with compelling images of everyday people and figures of historical importance, coupled with concise texts.
