Lyberde at 10

— By CHRIS AGEE

Severely injured in a fire when she was a baby, Lyberde Parker has not let setbacks deprive her of the joys of childhood. As she readies for her 10th birthday, Lyberde’s grandmother, Katherine Parker, recalled the “long road” it has been since that fateful day.

“She was burned in an apartment fire when she was four months old,” Parker said. The October, 2003, blaze burned much of Lyberde’s body and resulted in the young child losing her right leg above the knee and her right pinky finger.

“Palo Pinto County had CareFlite just three months before she was burned,” she added, explaining Lyberde was able to get prompt treatment of her injuries.

“She has had 16 surgeries since then,” Parker noted, explaining she continues to face ongoing procedures.

Despite the difficulties, Parker said her granddaughter is a “happy, energetic child” and takes part in many typical activities.

“She’s taking dance classes, she’s doing gymnastics,” Parker said, explaining Lyberde also excels in school.

Considering the concern and support from the community, Parker said she and Lyberde’s father, David, wanted to include give locals an update in celebration of her 10th birthday.
