MILLSAP - A 65-year-old man received non-life-threatening injuries Thursday when the truck he was driving was struck by a Union Pacific train on Doss Road, east of Mineral Wells.

Thomas H. Schwartz, who lives nearby, was westbound on Newberry Road and turning right onto Doss Road when the right front quarter panel of his Chevrolet Silverado Z71 pickup was struck by the westbound train shortly before 8:30 a.m., according to DPS Senior Trooper Gary Rozzell.

Schwartz hit his head and sustained cuts to his face but was alert and conscious and able to walk to the ambulance, according to authorities. He was transported to Weatherford Regional Medical Center by LifeCare.

Because it was initially unclear exactly where the collision occurred, volunteers from three different fire departments – Millsap, Greenwood and Cool-Garner – responded to the incident from different directions.

There are no active warning signals, such as flashing lights or arms, in addition to the cross-buck signs at the Doss Road crossing.

It’s the only train crossing in the Millsap area that doesn’t have them, according to Millsap VFD Assistant Chief Jeff Edwards.

“You’ve got to be paying attention,” Edwards said of the Doss Road crossing.

The road authority, such as TxDOT, is responsible for determining what types of warnings are at crossings, Raquel Espinoza, spokeswoman for Union Pacific said.
