Doggie Palooza

Dogs ‘harnessed’ for good cause

Mineral Wells Index

— From staff reports

Mineral Wells is going to the dogs this Saturday during the first annual Doggie Palooza.

The pet-inspired fundraising event is sponsored by the Mineral Wells Change program, a community outreach program that meets the needs of young people, ages 15 and up, “where they are in life and [to] help them become better citizens and people,” according to Trina Plyler.

Whether it's a chow hound, greyhound, big, little, ugly or adorable, there is a category for each pup.

The cost to show one dog is $12, but just $20 for two pooches. To register, visit ChangeMW.com or visit the Facebook page for ChangeMineralWells or call (940) 859-4509.

The palooza is free for spectators and there will be free hotdogs and drinks; in fact, there will be a hotdog-eating contest. Vendor space is free, but organizers ask that vendors contribute a basket, service or something for the silent auction.

It's something that a family with no money at all can come and bring their dog to, eat for free and have fun, according to Plyler. Anyone and everyone is invited.

The dog show and fun takes place from noon to 4 p.m. at Southside Church of Christ, located at 1401 S.E. 25th Ave., in Mineral Wells.

Competition categories include:

• Ugliest dog.

• Tiniest dog.

• Shortest dog.

• Best smile.

• Look alike.

• Hairiest dog.

• Most wrinkled.

• Best dressed.

• Smartest dog.

• Largest dog.

• Best name.

If anyone can't bring a dog, he or she may submit a photo via email to changemineralwells@gmail.com for no fee. Organizers will place the photo on a change jar and the pooch that brings in the most change will win its owner a T-shirt.

All proceeds benefit Change and help local residents improve their lives.
