When shopping at a store:
• Consider using prepaid cards rather than personal credit or debit cards. This way you don’t have to carry large amounts of cash or expose yourself to credit card fraud.
• Also consider using traveler’s checks to make purchases for the same reasons as above.
• Bags and purchases should be hidden from sight when placed and left in a vehicle so that someone walking by cannot see what is inside.
• Be aware of your surroundings and people. You might not be watching very closely but chances are someone else is and looking for an opportunity to strike or steal.
When shopping online:
• Don’t respond to email, text, and phone messages that ask for personal information. Legitimate companies don’t ask for information this way. Delete the messages.
• Create passwords that mix letters, numbers and special characters. Don’t use the same password for more than one account.
• Use websites that protect your financial information with encryption. An encrypted site has “https” at the beginning of the web address; “s” is for secure.
• If you use a public wireless network, don’t send information to any website that isn’t fully encrypted.
• Use anti-virus and anti-spyware software, and a firewall on your computer.
• Set your computer’s operating system, web browser, and security system to update automatically.
• Some credit card companies provide temporary or alternate card numbers or identification when shopping online for protection. Use those to help protect your account.
• If you believe you are the victim of ID theft, make an Identity Theft Report with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint or call 1-877-438-4338 and contact police. Those two things create an Identity Theft Report and can help resolve related issues.
