Author here Saturday for signing: new crime book has local ties

Stephenville-based author Sherri Knight will be signing copies of her book, "Death List: Trail of Terror," at the Booksatchell from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Knight said much of the action in the true crime story took place in Mineral Wells, explaining she chronicles the "nefarious odyssey" of three convicts who escaped from the Colorado State Penitentiary in 1974.

The trio stole vehicles, kidnapped two women and eventually made their way to the Lone Star State "where a West Texas rancher met his fate" one summer morning. Their life on the run led them to Possum Kingdom Lake, Knight said, where they broke into a cabin.

Two of the convicts broke away, she said, and headed to Breckenridge, at which point they stole a brand new Mercury Cougar.

A short time later the wanted individuals left the kidnapped girls in Graham and ended up in Mineral Wells, she explained.

Knight noted the convicts narrowly escaped police custody during a police chase and gun battle along U.S. Highway 281, just south of Mineral Wells.

She said it took 200 law enforcement officers from numerous agencies to track the trio down in Erath County.

"Two young Mineral Wells policemen, Freddie McDonald and Larry Bradenburg, were instrumental in finally nabbing the fugitives," Knight said.

She explained she interviewed more than 60 people in the process of writing this book, including one of the women kidnapped during the crime spree.

Knight described the story told in her book as one "few will forget who lived in this part of the state in 1974."

Booksatchell is located at 800 E. Hubbard St. in Mineral Wells.
