In the wake of the widespread ice storm at the beginning of this month, one local church is doing its part to make sure no one in Mineral Wells has to go with out a coat this Christmas or the rest of this winter.
Soul Winners AOH Church of God will pass out coats and fruit baskets for all who need them as their gift to the community this Saturday at 7 p.m. The event is the culmination of a coat drive and generous donation from Weatherford College that yielded about 100 coats of all shapes and sizes to go directly to the people of Mineral Wells.
Spearheaded by their pastor, Apostle James Green, the church – still relatively new to the area, having only been in Mineral Wells about two and a half years – was united in wanting to reach out to the local community, especially at Christmastime.
“God put it in our heart that we want to reach out and help people,” Green said.
“We’ve got a couple of shelters right by our church. Whenever we have something to give, that’s what we’re trying to do. We want to try to be a blessing to people in need.”
Green said he plans to play gospel music by Howard Hewitt while his congregation passes out coats and just has a good time giving back on Saturday. He hopes to give out every coat to someone who needs it and, in the process, spread the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
But Soul Winners’ giving does not stop with coats.
Green said to meet the needs of those staying at nearby shelters that are still responsible for feeding themselves, his church has started providing meals for those in need every Sunday.
He added that soon, they plan to start doing food drives.
On Thanksgiving last month, Soul Winners also prepared a Thanksgiving meal for any who needed it, smoking turkeys and serving sweet potato pies, cakes and a number of other homemade fixings.
“It’s all about helping people in need,” Green said.
Soul Winners is a church so focused on giving that Green said he does not receive a salary. He said he works with his hands throughout the week, doing carpentry, plumbing and electrical work to help pay both his bills and that of the church.
He is also a Fourth Responder with the Mineral Wells Police Department.
Green said anyone interested in volunteering or learning more about what Soul Winners is all about is more than welcome to drop by the coat drive on Saturday, at 900 Hood Road. He said everything they do stems from an attitude of selfless giving for God’s glory.
“Anybody that wants to come down and volunteer or see what we do, they are welcome to it. Everything we do at our church is from our heart; we don’t charge for anything.
“When people are in need, if I have it in my pocket, I’m going to reach in and give it to them. That’s what it’s all about.”
