Springtown boy run over by bus in front of home

Christin Coyne

WEATHERFORD — A 10-year-old Springtown ISD boy was pronounced dead Monday after being run over while trying to catch his school bus in front of his house.

The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. in the 100 block of Hilltop Meadows Drive during early morning darkness, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The southbound bus had stopped in front of the home to load a student, when the boy, identified as Haven Lee Norton, ran in front of the vehicle as it began moving, senior trooper Gary Rozzell said.

For some reason the driver did not see the boy and ran over the child, according to Rozzell.

The boy’s mother told authorities that he tripped and fell in front of the bus, Rozzell said.

Norton was pronounced dead at the scene.

In addition to the driver, four children and another adult were aboard the bus at the time.

The wreck is still under investigation, Rozzell said.

The driver did voluntarily go with Springtown ISD for a drug and alcohol screen per the district’s procedure, though troopers have no indication drugs or alcohol were a factor, Rozzell said.
