PET OF THE WEEK: Wandering Aussie mix needs new home

By Ellen Hargle | Special to the Index

“Charlie” is a friendly 3-month-old male Australian shepherd “Aussie” mix puppy, which was found wandering on a northeast neighborhood street.

His fluffy, tri-color coat has fawn, white and hints of black. His paws are large and he will likely grow to weigh around 50 pounds.

There are many theories about the origin of the Australian shepherd. The breed, as we know it today, probably developed in the Pyrenees Mountains somewhere between Spain and France, hence its thick coat that requires weekly brushing. It was called the Australian shepherd because of its association with Basque shepherds who came to America from Australia in the 1800s.

Charlie is an energetic and intelligent puppy and plays a great game of fetch and tug of war. He would require daily vigorous exercise, since the Aussie breed can be troublesome of not given enough exercise.

He needs a fenced in yard, positive puppy training, neutering and lots of socialization with people and other animals. Charlie would make an ideal dog for a family who is very active and willing to play and even run with him on a daily basis.

The cost of adoption includes neutering and a rabies shot. To adopt Charlie or any of numerous dogs, puppies, cats and kittens, call the Mineral Wells Animal Shelter at (940) 328-7752.
