Heritage Association to host ‘entertaining’ talk

Phil Garrett to speak Thursday on silent film star Corinne Griffith and her local ties

Silent film star Corinne Griffith’s connection to Mineral Wells and the Baker Hotel will be the topic at the Thursday, Sept. 12, Mineral Wells Heritage Association monthly meeting at the Rock School Museum.

The public is invited to join the 7 p.m. talk and homemade refreshments afterward.

County Attorney and history aficionado Phil Garrett will present this informal talk on Griffith, but he gave a little preview.

Married four times, Griffith would come to Mineral Wells just about every time she got a divorce, Garrett said, so she could file in Palo Pinto County. When she came to town, he said she would stay at the Baker Hotel, but noted that her aunt lived on North Oak Street.

“She was probably the prettiest silent screen star ever, but talked through her nose – she didn’t translate well into talkies,” said Garrett, adding that Griffith only made one talking movie.

She made many silent movies and invested in Los Angeles real estate, “and at the time of her death [in 1979], she was worth $150 million,” he said. “She also wrote about a dozen books. ‘Papa’s Delicate Condition’ was made into a film with Jackie Gleason.”

The 1952 book was a memoir of her childhood.

One of Griffith’s marriages was to George Marshall, who owned the Washington Redskins. Garret said Griffith wrote the Washington Redskin’s fight song when she was married to Marshall. According to online sources, in 1947 she wrote “My Life with the Redskins,” a history of the football team.

Join the Heritage Association for Garrett’s sure-to-be-entertaining presentation and, afterwards, enjoy refreshments, courtesy of Darleen Garrett.

The Rock School Museum is located at 105 NW 5th Ave. Those attending the talk are advised to park on the north side of the building and enter through the back door, nearest the Mineral Wells Senior Center.

The association will conduct its monthly business meeting at 6:30 p.m. and start the program at 7 p.m. For more information call 940-859-6877.
