During the recent Millsap ISD school board meeting, trustees discussed plans for a May 2 community forum to allow school board candidates to answer voters' questions. Newcomer Timothy Kukuk and incumbents Tommy Lucia and Jerry Walker will vie for two at-large places.
The trustee candidates are invited to attend the forum and give their position on issues related to Millsap ISD. The forum will take place at Millsap Elementary School, located at 101 Wilson Bend Road, beginning at 7 p.m.
Trustees heard Erin McEndree give a report on the School Health Advisory Committee.
Required to meet four times annually, to set goals and action for improving students' health, she said the group met five times during the school year, communicated through email and put on the health fair.
McEndree explained that the committee is required to have a majority of its members be parents who are not school employees. She added that the group is committed to helping establish healthy behaviors for a lifetime, and its programs address topics like sexual wellness and drunk driving and its consequences, and offers a platform for parents.
“We're trying to get into the kids' heads some different choices,” she told trustees.
The SHAC will conduct a youth risk assessment, designed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with high school students. McEndree said the group conducted the survey about three years ago at the middle school. She said the results will allow the committee to compare “to see if the programs we [have been] doing for the past three to four years are making a dent.”
In addition to the survey, McEndree said the group's future goals include looking at safety issues and they are working to bring “Shattered Dreams” to the district in 2014.
“They are a very passionate group and a positive one,” said Supt. David Belding.
