Organizer hopes cleanup becomes learned behavior

By CHRIS AGEE

A countywide cleanup last weekend yielded fewer-than-usual participants, but one organizer hopes it is because more locals are starting to develop habits that promote a clean community.

"I'm hoping some of it is that people are catching on," said Connie Ball, of Keep Mineral Wells Beautiful. She said the most recent clean-up day had less promotion than previous events, which might have also contributed to a smaller turnout.

She said a day is dedicated to beautifying the county twice each year – the first Saturday in May and the last Saturday in October – and she wants them to make an impact on locals that carries throughout the rest of the year.

"We're trying to educate people that there is free curbside pickup on bulk items all the time," she said. "If you've got large items, put them at the curb. They kind of request that you call them and let them know it is for trash haul-off and not designated for somebody else."

To notify Progressive Waste Solutions of a bulk item pickup request, call (940) 328-1176.

"A lot of people aren't even aware we do recycling at the Convenience Station," Ball added, "and it doesn't cost anything."

The entrance to the Convenience Station is located at 2700 U.S. Highway 281 South. To save time and effort, it is recommended to stop by and pick up information detailing what the city accepts before recycling for the first time.

Hours are Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
