Chamber challenges businesses in community cleanup

By CHRIS AGEE

As the first incarnation of Project 365 wraps up, the focus of volunteers involved in the initiative will be community blight in the southeast section of Mineral Wells.

Throughout the first three phases of the project, law enforcement has worked with other organizations and volunteers to combat a litany of concerns in the southwest quadrant, which contains portions of wards 1 and 4.

Since Project 365 kicked off last August, those involved have focused on law enforcement as well as cleaning up graffiti and eyesores such as deteriorating structures or uncontrolled grass and weeds. Additionally, local police have encouraged the implementation of neighborhood watch programs throughout the city.

As the fourth and final phase gets under way, the initiative calls for community assistance in the effort to revitalize the area.

Mineral Wells Area Chamber of Commerce Chairman Dacey Malone issued a challenge to area businesses to get involved in the project by “adopting” a home in the area. She explained city beautification has been a central chamber concern during her tenure and encouraged businesses, churches, and other organizations to spend some time making a positive difference.

The projects are primarily simple jobs, such as painting or trim work, and can usually be completed by a team in one day.

Furr Building Materials and Sutherlands have already donated paint for the projects and Malone’s employer, Titan Bank, became the first business to adopt a home.

Those interested in taking part in the challenge can pick up a packet at the chamber, 511 Hubbard St.

Leadership Mineral Wells Class 18 alumna Kelli Buschow is coordinating the project and prospective volunteers can contact her at (940) 327-7555 for more information.

The deadline for project completion is Aug. 1 and the results will be celebrated the next week at National Night Out.
