With many people looking for ways to save on food costs, poultry raising can be a healthy, fun and educational choice. To that end, Walden Farm & Ranch Supply has announced the 2013 “Chick Days,” providing poultry-raising resources to the community from February to April.
Three seminars will be held in conjunction with Chick Days: on Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Mineral Wells location at 196 Garrett Morris Pkwy.; Saturday March 9, at the Weatherford location, 2551 South Main St.; and at the Millsap store at 201 Fairview Road on Saturday, March 23. All seminars start at 10 a.m. and the topic is “Family Flock Nutrition & Management.”
“It’s an exciting time around here,” says Chris Schofield of Walden Farm & Ranch Supply. “And it’s become quite a big deal. Last year we sold a little over 5,500 chickens; this year we are shooting for 6,000. When you stop and think about it, that equivocates to quite a few eggs.”
Throughout the duration of Chick Days, Walden Farm & Ranch Supply will have information available to offer advice and guidance on how to raise chickens from freshly hatched chicks through laying.
“We have a knowledgeable staff that can offer advice at all levels of egg production. Whether helping a beginning chick farmer, or someone who has raised poultry for years,” says Schofield.
“Raising poultry to sustain a family’s food supply is something that dates back to the beginning of time. We love helping children and adults alike, embark on that adventure,” added Schofield. “Chick Days are designed to educate people on how easy it is to raise their own chickens. There’s a sense of pride and self-sufficiency in raising your own food. Children learn responsibility and make a worthwhile contribution to the household by caring for the flock.”
