Trumpeters to ‘call in’ Christmas Eve

Mineral Wells Index

— From Staff Reports

After a two-year hiatus, the overlook from Dale and Margaret Strain’s backyard patio will again serve as the stage for a pair of trumpeters this Christmas Eve. Beginning at 9 p.m., Mineral Wells High School band members Jacki Echols and McKenna Harrison will herald in Christmas from the southern tip of West Mountain and into the valley of Mineral Wells.

Shortly before 9 p.m., the Strains will have Joe Baker coordinate the sound system and play Christmas music from their overlook. The musicians will perform two verses of “Silent Night” at the stroke of 9 p.m.

Margaret Strain said that observers can park in the west lot of First Baptist Church, the Mineral Wells Senior Center or the vicinity and should be able to see and hear the performance.

The home once belonged to the late D.C. and Bea Harris. According to A.F. Weaver’s book, “Time Was in Mineral Wells,” a lone man with a trumpet and a megaphone stood atop West Mountain in the 1930s and played a solo rendition of “Silent Night.” The tradition was recalled in 1985 and performed from the Harrises’ backyard patio. In 2007 the Strains revived the local tradition, with a hiatus beginning in 2010.
