— From staff reports

Dr. Kayla Peak will be the guest speaker at the 20th Annual Hall of Honor Induction Ceremony to be held Wednesday, at the Mineral Wells High School auditorium.

Peak is a 1984 graduate of Mineral Wells and currently serves as assistant professor in Kinesiology as well as the coordinator of the Kinesiology Graduate Program at Tarleton State University.

After MWHS, she received a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master’s of Education, in Physical Education, both from TSU. She completed her doctoral degree in Physical Education and Recreation at Texas A&M University-Commerce in 1995. While at TAMU-Commerce, Peak served as assistant athletic director for three years, followed by a 10-year stint as director of campus recreation. In 2006, she accepted a faculty position at TSU.

Peak’s greatest professional passion is teaching. She has re-designed her courses so that each has an applied-learning component, which challenges the students to become active and engaged participants in their learning experience.

Recognized by the Texas A&M University System, Peak was presented the Excellence in Teaching award in ’09, ’10, and ’11. She also received TSU’s Jack and Louise Arthur Award in 2011, which recognizes excellence in the college classroom.

Most recently Peak was honored as the 2012 University Physical Educator of the Year by the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, a state organization promoting excellence in the profession.

Kayla has been married to the love of her life, Paul Peak, since 1993, and Paul-David Wood Peak, their handsome son, was born in 2005.

The public is invited to attend the Hall of Honor, which takes place at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the high school auditorium.
