Smoking prohibited on library property

Acting on a request from both the Friends of the Boyce Ditto Public Library and the library’s board, city council members voted unanimously to permit a smoking ban inside and outside of the building.

“As with all city buildings, smoking is prohibited within the library building proper,” City Manager Lance Howerton explained. Council moved to amend the Mineral Wells Code of Ordinances to include outside areas at the library within the definition of “public places.” The amendment allows a smoking ban to be enforceable on all library property.

Howerton said he was not aware of any library employees who smoke, explaining patrons have complained about fellow patrons smoking near the library entrance.

Texas Capital Fund applications resubmitted

A number of local businesses seeking a Texas Capital Fund grant for expansions had their applications resubmitted following council action taken Tuesday evening.

According to City Manager Lance Howerton, each company previously received council approval. When TCF did not select the applications in its initial funding round, each was rolled over to receive future consideration.

The projects presented Tuesday have been preliminarily selected for funding, though changes in the program require applications to be resubmitted to achieve compliance.

New applications for potential beneficiaries Watkins Metal Fabrications Inc. and Tru-Test Inc. are for the same amount as in the initial submission, Howerton explained.

Due to a funding cap placed on grants based on the number of jobs created, the resubmitted application for PECOFacet was readjusted to $120,000 for the facility and $35,000 for administrative costs.
