The ongoing conversation among city leaders concerning the replacement of lighting on the city's municipal airport runway will continue at tonight's Mineral Wells City Council meeting.

The topic was last discussed at a December meeting during which City Manager Lance Howerton explained his staff previously submitted a request to participate in the capital improvement project through Texas Department of Transportation Aviation.

Tonight's discussion will revolve around a resolution to ratify the execution of the project contract with TxDOT.

Howerton explained during the previous discussion the total cost to upgrade lighting and install a visual approach aid at the airport will be an estimated $1.23 million. Under the contract, the city will be required to contribute a 10-percent matching share.

The funding, plus cost of engineering, would come from the airport fund balance. In December, Howerton explained the engineering phase of the project would begin this fiscal year with construction set to follow next year.

He said the project would make Mineral Wells home to one of the first municipal airports with light-emitting diode lights illuminating its runway.
